How We Offer This Service
Our Trauma & Abuse Counselling service is delivered by therapists specially trained in trauma-informed care and evidence-based trauma treatments. We understand that children who have experienced abuse or trauma need an exceptional level of safety, predictability, and sensitivity. Every aspect of our service is designed to prevent re-traumatization while gently guiding the healing process.
Our Therapeutic Approach:
- Trauma-Focused Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (TF-CBT): The gold-standard treatment for children who have experienced trauma, helping them process difficult memories and develop coping skills
- Child-Centered Safety Planning: Establishing clear safety protocols and helping children understand their right to bodily autonomy
- Somatic & Body-Based Techniques: Addressing the physical manifestations of trauma stored in the body
- Gradual Exposure & Processing: Working at the child's pace to process traumatic memories without becoming overwhelmed
- Expressive Arts Therapy: Using drawing, painting, and storytelling when words are too difficult
- Caregiver Support & Psychoeducation: Teaching parents how to support their child's healing and recognize trauma responses
Session Structure & Safety Measures
Sessions are held in a consistently calm, predictable environment. Each session begins with grounding exercises and ends with stabilization activities. We never push children to discuss experiences they aren't ready to address. Parents receive weekly updates (excluding sensitive content) and guidance on supporting their child between sessions. For cases involving ongoing safety concerns, we coordinate with child protective services and legal authorities as required by law while maintaining the child's emotional wellbeing as our priority.
Mandatory Reporting: As mandated reporters, we are legally required to report ongoing abuse to child protective services. This is explained to all families at intake to ensure transparency.
Why This Service Is Important
Childhood trauma and abuse have profound, lasting effects on brain development, emotional regulation, physical health, and relationships. Without specialized intervention, traumatized children face significantly higher risks of lifelong struggles.
The impact of unaddressed childhood trauma includes:
- Altered brain development affecting memory, impulse control, and stress response systems
- Increased risk of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), depression, and anxiety disorders
- Higher rates of substance abuse, self-harm, and suicidal ideation in adolescence
- Difficulty forming secure attachments and trusting relationships
- Physical health problems including autoimmune disorders and chronic pain
- Intergenerational cycles of abuse and trauma
With our specialized trauma counselling, children experience:
- Reduction in PTSD symptoms including nightmares, flashbacks, and hypervigilance
- Improved emotional regulation and reduced reactivity to triggers
- Restored sense of safety and ability to trust caregivers
- Healthier self-concept and reduced shame or self-blame
- Better academic engagement and social functioning
- Breaking the cycle of trauma for the next generation
Research Shows: Children who receive trauma-focused therapy within 12 months of an adverse experience show 85% greater improvement in symptoms compared to those who receive delayed or no treatment.
Healing Takes Time
Trauma recovery is not linear. Our therapists work at each child's unique pace, typically over 12-20 sessions, with some children benefiting from longer-term support. We celebrate small victories and never rush the healing process.
